What Is SIP Trunking and How Does It Work?

If you are moving to a modern phone system, you will quickly meet the term SIP trunking - and it is worth understanding because it is where a lot of the savings come from. In plain terms, SIP trunking is how your phone system connects to the outside world over the internet instead of through traditional phone lines. It replaces racks of copper lines with flexible virtual “channels” you can scale on demand. This guide explains what a SIP trunk is, how it works, and why businesses across Zimbabwe and Africa are switching to it.

What “SIP trunk” actually means

Two pieces of jargon, unpacked:

  • SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the standard that sets up and ends internet phone calls.
  • A trunk is the connection between your phone system and the telephone network - historically a bundle of physical lines.

Put them together and a SIP trunk is a virtual trunk: a connection over the internet that carries your calls to and from the public phone network. Instead of renting physical lines, you buy channels - each channel handles one simultaneous call.

How SIP trunking works

Here is the journey of a call:

  1. A staff member dials out from their IP phone or app.
  2. Your phone system (PBX) - for example 3CX - routes the call to your SIP trunk.
  3. The SIP trunk provider connects the call across the internet to the public phone network.
  4. The call reaches the recipient, whether they are on a mobile, a landline, or another VoIP system.

Incoming calls follow the same path in reverse. To the people you call, it is just a normal phone call - they never know it travelled over the internet.

Why businesses switch to SIP trunks

Lower cost

There is no line rental, call rates are far cheaper (especially national and international), and you only pay for the channels you actually need. For most businesses this is a substantial saving.

Scalability on demand

Need more capacity for a busy season or a new branch? Add channels in minutes - no engineer, no new physical lines. Scale back down just as easily.

Number flexibility

Keep your existing numbers by porting them, and add new local numbers in other cities or countries to create a local presence anywhere you do business.

Resilience

Calls can be rerouted automatically to mobiles or another site if there is a problem, so you stay reachable.

How many channels do you need?

This is the question that saves money. You need roughly one channel per simultaneous call at your busiest moment - not one per employee. A 20-person office where, at peak, 7 people are on calls at once needs around 7 channels. Sizing this correctly means you never get a busy signal but never pay for idle capacity. We work it out with you.

What to watch for

SIP trunking is only as good as its setup. Voice traffic should be prioritised on your network (quality of service), your connection should be stable, and security must be configured to prevent call fraud. A good local partner handles all of this - which is the difference between SIP that “sort of works” and SIP that is rock solid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a SIP trunk?

A SIP trunk is a virtual phone line that connects your PBX to the public telephone network over the internet. Instead of physical copper lines, you buy 'channels' - each channel carries one simultaneous call - from a SIP trunk provider.

How many SIP channels do I need?

You need roughly one channel per simultaneous call at your busiest time, not per employee. A 20-person office might only need 6 to 8 channels. We size this with you so you neither run out nor overpay.

Does SIP trunking work with 3CX?

Yes. SIP trunks are an open standard and work with 3CX and other standards-based IP PBXs. We configure the trunk and PBX together so everything works reliably from day one.

Is SIP trunking cheaper than traditional phone lines?

Usually significantly. SIP trunks remove line rental, offer much lower call rates, and let you scale channels up or down on demand instead of installing physical lines.
